NINA AVERY

Nina Avery was named for the matriarch of the McIlhenny family of Avery Island, La where the famous "Tabasco" sauce is made.

This bloom is very unusual in that the coral is streaked from edge of petal back toward the center. It grabs one's attention.

This large variegated red bloom is impressive but the plant on its own roots is not a strong, vigorous grower. Probably should be grafted.

PROFESSOR CHARLES S. SARGENT

Dark red. Medium full peony form. Vigorous compact upright growth. Mid season bloom

GROWER NOTES:

To me Prof. Sargent is not an outstanding bloom, nice but not outstanding. But it is a tough, hardy plant that will stand up to most winters with little or no damage. A great plant for Atlanta, Birmingham, and other areas where you can get damage from cold.

PURPLE PASSION

Reddish purple center to deep purple outer petals with dark purple radial veining. Medium formal double. Average upright dense growth. Mid to late season bloom.

GROWER'S NOTES:

This is one I registered from the Dodd seedling block. It caught my attention for its deep purple color. I have found that in my nursery container soil it doesn’t get the deep purple color but when it is planted in a garden with a low pH it is amazing. It won best medium japonica at the Massee Lane Show, February 2022.

RACHEL TARPY

White shading to blush pink with occasional red lines or dashes. Medium to large anemone form, wavy, ruffled outer petals. Early to mid season bloom.

GROWER'S NOTES:

This is one I like a lot. The bloom makes you do a double take, first it is red, then you see the orange overtones. Very pretty and a nice upright tight growth too!

SAWADA’S DREAM

White with one third outer petals shaded delicate flesh pink. Medium formal double. Average growth. Early to mid season bloom.

GROWER NOTES:

First introduced in 1958 by the Sawada family of Overlook Nursery. Mr Sawada considered it to be his crowning achievement in hybridizing camellias. I concur-it is certainly one of my favorites.

I describe this one as a “fried egg, sunny side up”. Good grower, dependable bloomer.

SWEET MARY

Blush pink center petals darkening to shell pink on the outer petals. Medium formal double have a swirled pattern about 40% of the time. Average upright dense growth. Early to mid season bloom.

GROWER'S NOTES:

From my Americus, GA friend, Mickey Moore, who named the seedling for his late wife Mary. It is a pretty bloom on a strong vigorous growing plant. It will swirl at 2 or 3 years. I had a number of 3-gallons with the swirl bloom appear in 2022.

SWEETIE PIE

Blush pink with one or more red stripes. Large to very large semidouble with occasional rabbit ears. Average compact growth. Mid season bloom.

TAKANINI

Deep purplish red. Small to medium anemone form. Early to mid season.

GROWER NOTES:

Very early bloomer, deep red anemone ball. Does well in shows. Plant growth is slow, maybe because it sets so many flower buds.

Brilliant dark red bordered white. Small to medium single. Early to mid season bloom.

A must have for any serious camellia collection. We are evaluating a number of selections for their bloom & ability to grow on their own roots. Slow grower and limited quantities makes this plant more costly than regular japonicas.
