Nina Avery was named for the matriarch of the McIlhenny family of Avery Island, La where the famous "Tabasco" sauce is made.

GROWER'S NOTES:

Nice formal white. During the 2021-22 season it had excellent blooms early, then mid-season it had all “bull nosed” blooms followed by excellent blooms late in the season.

GROWER NOTES:

This bloom is very unusual in that the coral is streaked from edge of petal back toward the center. It grabs one's attention.

GROWER'S NOTES:

This large variegated red bloom is impressive but the plant on its own roots is not a strong, vigorous grower. Probably should be grafted.

Every camellia garden must include Pink Perfection. First introduced in 1875 it is still one of the most popular varieties.

PRINCE EUGENE NAPOLEON

Cherry red. Medium, formal double with many small rounded petals which are progressively smaller toward the center. Mid season. Very compact, upright growth.

Very old variety (1859). Great for background screening plant with color (red) in mid season.

PROFESSOR CHARLES S. SARGENT

Dark red. Medium full peony form. Vigorous compact upright growth. Mid season bloom


GROWER NOTES:

To me Prof. Sargent is not an outstanding bloom, nice but not outstanding. But it is a tough, hardy plant that will stand up to most winters with little or no damage. A great plant for Atlanta, Birmingham, and other areas where you can get damage from cold.


PURPLE PASSION

Reddish purple center to deep purple outer petals with dark purple radial veining. Medium formal double. Average upright dense growth. Mid to late season bloom.


GROWER'S NOTES:

This is one I registered from the Dodd seedling block. It caught my attention for its deep purple color. I have found that in my nursery container soil it doesn’t get the deep purple color but when it is planted in a garden with a low pH it is amazing. It won best medium japonica at the Massee Lane Show, February 2022.


RACHEL TARPY

White shading to blush pink with occasional red lines or dashes. Medium to large anemone form, wavy, ruffled outer petals. Early to mid season bloom.

Light rose pink with wide white petal edges and streaks of raspberry on each petal. Medium, semi double.

A great introduction in 1987 from Nuccio's Nursery in California.  Royal velvet performs well in the South and the bloom is just as described. Fast, strong grower too!

SATSUMA KURENAI

Brilliant orange red. Medium to large rose form double. Vigorous upright columnar growth. Mid to late season bloom.


GROWER'S NOTES:

This is one I like a lot. The bloom makes you do a double take, first it is red, then you see the orange overtones. Very pretty and a nice upright tight growth too!


SAWADA’S DREAM

White with one third outer petals shaded delicate flesh pink. Medium formal double. Average growth. Early to mid season bloom.


GROWER NOTES:

First introduced in 1958 by the Sawada family of Overlook Nursery. Mr Sawada considered it to be his crowning achievement in hybridizing camellias. I concur-it is certainly one of my favorites.

White. Large formal double. Vigorous upright growth. Late season bloom.

A terrific formal white. The plant is fast growing & trouble free. A regular winner at shows.

Deep magenta pink with lighter pink flashes on inside petals variegated white. Medium semidouble form with heart shaped petals. Average open spreading growth. Mid to late season bloom.

Clear light pink. Very large semi-double with fluted petals. Vigorous upright growth. Mid season bloom.

A great show bloom. Our stock comes from the collection of Frank & Margaret Jamison who were consistent winners with their blooms. A strong grower introduced in 1978 by Nuccio's Nursery.


SILVER WAVES

White. Large  semidouble with wavy petals. Vigorous bushy upright growth. Early to mid season bloom.


GROWER'S NOTES:

I describe this one as a “fried egg, sunny side up”. Good grower, dependable bloomer.


SNOWMAN

White. Large semidouble with curled and twisted inner petals and notched and incurved outer petals. Vigorous spreading upright growth. Mid season bloom.

SWEET MARY

Blush pink center petals darkening to shell pink on the outer petals. Medium formal double have a swirled pattern about 40% of the time. Average upright dense growth. Early to mid season bloom.


GROWER'S NOTES:

From my Americus, GA friend, Mickey Moore, who named the seedling for his late wife Mary. It is a pretty bloom on a strong vigorous growing plant. It will swirl at 2 or 3 years. I had a number of 3-gallons with the swirl bloom appear in 2022.


SWEETIE PIE

Blush pink with one or more red stripes. Large to very large semidouble with occasional rabbit ears. Average compact growth. Mid season bloom.


TAKANINI

Deep purplish red. Small to medium anemone form. Early to mid season.


GROWER NOTES:

Very early bloomer, deep red anemone ball. Does well in shows. Plant growth is slow, maybe because it sets so many flower buds.

Brilliant dark red bordered white. Small to medium single. Early to mid season bloom.


TAMA GLITTERS

TAMA-NO-URA

Originated in Japan and  introduced by Nuccio's Nursery. Has a simple but unique bloom and the plant will over time develop a weeping, cascading form.

TOMORROW’S DAWN BESSIE

Sport of ‘Tomorrow’s Dawn’. Deep soft pink to light pink with wide border of white with some white petaloids and one or more petals having streak of red. Large to very large. Early to mid season bloom.


TOMORROW PARK HILL

Sport of ‘Tomorrow Var.’ Light soft pink generally deepening toward edge with some white variegation. Large to very large. Early to mid season bloom.

Variable colors from nearly white to solid red but majority white striped red or light pink margined white. Large semidouble. Vigorous compact upright growth. Mid season bloom.

GROWER NOTES:

A must have for any serious camellia collection. We are evaluating a number of selections for their bloom & ability to grow on their own roots. Slow grower and limited quantities makes this plant more costly than regular japonicas.
