To me Prof. Sargent is not an outstanding bloom, nice but not outstanding. But it is a tough, hardy plant that will stand up to most winters with little or no damage. A great plant for Atlanta, Birmingham, and other areas where you can get damage from cold.

PURPLE PASSION
Reddish purple center to deep purple outer petals with dark purple radial veining. Medium formal double. Average upright dense growth. Mid to late season bloom.
GROWER'S NOTES:
This is one I registered from the Dodd seedling block. It caught my attention for its deep purple color. I have found that in my nursery container soil it doesn’t get the deep purple color but when it is planted in a garden with a low pH it is amazing. It won best medium japonica at the Massee Lane Show, February 2022.

First introduced in 1958 by the Sawada family of Overlook Nursery. Mr Sawada considered it to be his crowning achievement in hybridizing camellias. I concur-it is certainly one of my favorites.

From my Americus, GA friend, Mickey Moore, who named the seedling for his late wife Mary. It is a pretty bloom on a strong vigorous growing plant. It will swirl at 2 or 3 years. I had a number of 3-gallons with the swirl bloom appear in 2022.
